The survey comes first
An EV charger is not a socket on a wall. Before anything is fitted we assess the property: the incoming supply and main fuse rating, the earthing arrangement, the spare capacity at the consumer unit, and the route the cable will take. Those checks decide whether the installation goes ahead as planned or needs something upgrading first, and they are the reason a proper installer will want to look at your meter position before quoting.
Load is the part homeowners rarely expect. A 7kW charger draws around 32A continuously, often for hours, and often overnight when the shower, oven and immersion may also be in use. The supply has to cope with that alongside everything else in the house. Where it will not, load curtailment can be fitted so the charger backs off automatically rather than tripping the main fuse.
Earthing and protection
Outdoor charging brings its own risk, because a fault on the supply network can make exposed metalwork live while someone is standing on wet ground holding a car. Modern chargers deal with this either through built-in PEN fault detection or through an earth rod, and the right answer depends on the property. Chargers also need their own dedicated circuit with the correct RCD protection — not a spur off something else.
The installation was fully tested and certified before handover, and the customer was shown how to operate it.
