CONSUMER UNIT & FUSE BOARD UPGRADES

CONSUMER UNIT UPGRADES IN NEWPORT PAGNELL & MILTON KEYNES

Professional consumer unit and fuse board upgrades for homes and businesses across Newport Pagnell, Milton Keynes and surrounding areas. Replacing an older fuse board with a modern consumer unit can improve electrical safety, protection and reliability while helping bring your installation in line with current requirements. Every board change is tested and certified, and if you need the installation formally inspected we also carry out EICR testing. Older boards often need upgrading before an EV charger can be installed.

CHECKING YOUR EXISTING FUSE BOARD

DOES YOUR FUSE BOARD NEED UPGRADING?

An older fuse board does not automatically mean it needs replacing. Its condition, the protection provided and the overall electrical installation should all be considered before recommending an upgrade.

OLDER FUSE BOARD? THERE ARE A FEW THINGS WORTH CHECKING
01

Older Fuse Technology

Some older installations still use rewireable fuses or older protective devices. Their presence does not automatically make an installation unsafe, but it can indicate that the consumer unit has been in service for many years.

02

Limited Additional Protection

Older boards may have little or no additional protection for some circuits. The existing arrangement should be inspected to determine what protection is currently provided.

03

Signs of Damage or Heat

Discolouration, cracking, loose covers, burning smells or signs of overheating should not be ignored and should be investigated by a qualified electrician.

04

Unclear Circuit Labelling

If the circuits are missing labels or the descriptions no longer match the installation, identifying and isolating the correct circuit can be more difficult.

05

Recurring Electrical Problems

Frequent tripping, intermittent faults or other electrical problems should be properly investigated rather than assuming the consumer unit itself is the cause.

06

Condition of the Installation

The consumer unit is only one part of the electrical installation. Cabling, earthing, bonding and the condition of the existing circuits can also affect whether an upgrade is appropriate.

IMPORTANT A VISUAL CHECK CANNOT CONFIRM THE CONDITION OF AN ELECTRICAL INSTALLATION

If you are unsure about your fuse board, an electrician can inspect the installation and carry out appropriate electrical testing before advising whether replacement is necessary.

MODERN CONSUMER UNIT UPGRADES

WHAT TO EXPECT FROM A FUSE BOARD UPGRADE

A consumer unit replacement is more than simply swapping one fuse board for another. The existing installation should be assessed so the new consumer unit, protective devices and circuit arrangements are suitable for the property.

MODERN PROTECTION RCBO & SURGE PROTECTION
01

Improved Circuit Protection

Modern consumer units can provide individual RCBO protection, helping isolate certain electrical faults to the affected circuit rather than unnecessarily disconnecting other circuits.

02

Surge Protection

A modern consumer unit can incorporate a surge protection device (SPD) where required, helping protect electrical and electronic equipment from transient overvoltages.

03

Clear Circuit Identification

Circuits should be clearly identified and labelled, making it easier to understand which protective device controls each part of the installation.

04

Future Electrical Work

A suitable consumer unit can make future additions such as lighting, socket circuits or an EV charger easier to accommodate, subject to the design and capacity of the existing electrical installation.

THE UPGRADE PROCESS

WHAT HAPPENS DURING A CONSUMER UNIT REPLACEMENT?

01 Assess

The existing electrical installation, circuits, earthing arrangements and supply are assessed.

02 Select

A suitable consumer unit and appropriate protective devices are selected for the installation.

03 Install

The existing board is replaced and the circuits are connected into the new consumer unit.

04 Test

The completed work is inspected, electrically tested, labelled and certified as appropriate.

WHEN SHOULD YOU CONSIDER AN UPGRADE?

IS YOUR EXISTING FUSE BOARD OUTDATED?

An upgrade may be worth considering where the existing consumer unit provides limited protection, shows signs of deterioration or no longer suits the requirements of the property.
